WE THOUGHT WE WERE SAFE... WE WERE WRONG! 2380 is a precarious age; Three years after the return of the USS Voyager and with no major conflicts since the end of the Dominion War at a glance the universe seems to be cooperating and working within agreed peace treaties and trade agreements. There is, however, a restless underbelly that could threaten the hard won harmony. Philosophers have always said that any utopia was the work of fiction as one man's paradise is another man's hell. Starfleet, undaunted by the undercurrents in the galaxy, or perhaps because of them, is continuing its role of scientific exploration, expanding its borders and voyaging once more into the unknown. The USS Relentless and the USS Horizon are spearheading the new exploration, making allies (and enemies) as they go. Solidifying the Federation presence in the surrounding sectors of space, Starbase 9 acts as a commercial hub as much as a military outpost. The USS Horizon is a Nova-class scientific research vessel. Having undergone numerous modifications to enhance both the scientific and combat capabilities of the vessel, the crew of the Horizon explore beyond Federation borders, operating as a deep space research and, additionally, a First Contact vessel. Under the command of Captain Scott Deadilus the Horizon's scientific staff are second-to-none. The USS Relentless, under the command of Captain Abigail Winters, is an Intrepid-class explorer vessel outfitted with a recovered Progenitor 'jump drive', allowing the ship's crew to travel between universes, truly exploring beyond the final frontier of space alone. As an unexpected side-effect of the installation of the 'jump drive', the Relentless' computer has attained sentience, choosing the name of 'Relly' for herself after hearing the crew affectionately refer to the ship by its nickname. Starbase 9 provides a regular port of call for the two vessels, providing the homebase facilities for numerous other Starfleet units in the vicinity, including the Steamrunner-class USS Destiny under the command of Captain Leora Wey and the Akira-class USS Exeter under the command of Captain Hito Namaga. However, a darker side of the Federation can always be found on the lower levels of the starbase, and sometimes a little too close to home, for in a war against evil, there is no black and white, only grey...
