Scott graduated from Starfleet Academy
in the top quartile of his year (graduating with honours).
Although not exceeding in any one particular subject, his
ability to pick up any new subject and rapidly become familiar
with it made him an excellent scientist, engineer and pilot.
Moreover, his social attitude caused him to miss vital points
required to graduate in the top percentile, although he sees
this as a good thing.
After his graduation, he served onboard the Federation
flagship as a Science Officer, putting his skills to the best
use he could. Advancing the knowledge of Starfleet science when
not engaged in combat, Scott has dealt with many cutting-edge
technologies and discoveries, including ninth-dimensional matter
on which he wrote papers detailing the theoretical usage in
high-yield warheads, although recommended against its use due to
potential dimensional tearing. During an incursion into the
'mirror universe', Scott witnessed his warning going unheeded,
resulting in the death of over 2000 starbase and support
personnel.
Subsequent (non-classified) mission profiles have included
several temporal missions, numerous first contact scenarios and
engagements with the Borg. During one of these earlier
assignments the away team encountered a telepathic Klingon.
Although causing severe initial discomfort, the encounter with
this being led to an alteration to his mindscape, resulting in
an even more heightened resistance to telepathic intrusion.

Served aboard the USS Independence as a Science Officer after graduating from Starfleet
Academy.
After the death of Chief Science Officer Commander Willis
during an engagement with the Borg, Scott led the Science
Department through the ensuing firefight. Captain Altesoul, noting
his 'calm under pressure', promoted him to Acting Chief Science
Officer. The position was fully granted two months later after a
review with Starfleet Command, and the position confirmed with a
promotion to Lt. Commander. Promoted to Commander one year later
to the day.
After serving six tours of duty with the crew, Starfleet
Command recommended him for a Captaincy opening on a science
vessel (the USS Horizon).
