Character History

Peter Hill was born and raised in Cape Town and has lived his whole life for the goal of captaining his own vessel. He attended the prestigious Nelson Mandela School, which prepared him for entry directly into the fleet academy in 2367. The Hill family has a long line of representatives in Starfleet, ranging in all disciplines, to two being captains and a grandfather serving as an Admiral many years before Peter was born.

His father is a professor of medicine, his mother a clerk in one of the local wineries of the Cape Peninsula. He had an older brother who was killed in the Dominion War in 2375 and his sister is a nurse currently working in one of Starfleet's Medical Rehabilitation Facilities in London. Peters' father wanted him to be a doctor, but Peter could never decide what he wanted to be. It was not until he joined the Academy that he realised that he wanted to be in the Helm division of Starfleet.

He did his four years at the Academy and his first posting was the Curry-class USS Drexler before being reassigned to the USS Buckingham, taking part in the Sol System Defence campaign. He was on this ship when the Dominion War started. It was the opportunity that seemed to bring out the best in him.

In 2375, while the Alliance and Romulans bombarded and attacked Cardassia Prime, the Buckingham took part in a raid against a Dominion outpost in the Cardassian Sector. The ship picked up a Starfleet distress signal coming from an Class L planet in the system, and while the battle raged a runabout was sent to retrieve the stranded Starfleet personnel. Peter Hill was assigned the helm station on the runabout. The planet; Generon IV was alive with ion-storms and so a beam out was impossible. So, with a crew of 4, Hill was sent to investigate and pull out the senders of that signal.

They were ambushed by a Dominion Heavy Fighter in the upper atmosphere of Generon IV. The runabout was out-gunned and suffered severe damage. An ion discharge in the murky atmosphere of the planet caused a momentary sub-space rupture that crippled the runabout, but completely destroyed the attacking fighter. The crash scattered debris across a continent; only Hill and his security officer, Damian Jameson survived to discover that the distress signal had been a ruse. The explosion and debris had been registered by the Buckingham, and in the midst of battle it was impossible to determine survivors. The Buckingham was however destroyed during the raid, and Hill and his co-survivor was left alone on a hostile planet.

They were stranded for 9 months, surviving on their Starfleet training and dodging the Cardassian patrols from a garrison outpost on the planet that served a fighter base. For their survival they were awarded the Starfleet Survival Cross. They remained in hiding, not knowing that the war ended until they were eventually captured by a Cardassian patrol in 2376. After much confusion and learning that the war was over, they were returned to the Federation and a completely different galaxy. They were transported back to Earth by the USS Jackson where they found out why the Buckingham never sent for them or tried to rescued them.

Hill underwent psychological and trauma counselling, and at the end of 2376 was released back into formal duty after completing a six month advanced training program at the academy. He had also been promoted to Lieutenant JG. He was assigned to the Wellington where he left off at Helm control. Also his Advanced tactical and training made him an ideal candidate to fly roundabouts on away mission, even more so now.

Personal Note

Hill's philosophies in life revolve around one thing; RESPECT.

He lives by the simple rule, "If you want his respect, then give him respect". The only people who get respect before they give respect to him are his superiors. That respect can be easily lost however, if he feels that the captain he is under or any authority for that matter is abusing the authority or that person is shown to be incompetent. He will take matters further up the line if he is not entirely happy.
