Dathan was a Security trainee onboard his Father's Warbird, the Dour, when the Borg attacked. The vessel was destroyed and out of 2,552 crew only 14 survived. The resultant explosion of both vessels destroyed the lifepod's navigational instruments, and they drifted into Federation space.

When he was located he was scanned and found to be half-human (on his maternal side). However, when the Federation Council contacted the Romulan government they were told that Dathan had no living family on Romulus or Remus. Due to the fact that his uncle was a member of the Romulan senate it was agreed by the Tal'Shiar not to inform Dathan's uncle to protect him from those who might attempt to use this information against him. As such, Dathan returned to Earth to try and find his mother, only to find out that she too had died only months before, also at the hands of the Borg.

He joined Starfleet and graduated in the top 15% of his class. During the post-graduation break Dathan returned to Romulus whilst awaiting assignment. He was subsequently ordered by Starfleet Tactical to the USS Mystery, and then on to a new assignment aboard the USS Carpathia.

No sooner than he had taken his station, news of the death of his wife (Galatea) reached him; his two twin children, Neathen and Phedria were sent to join their father. It was for this reason that Dathan thought it best to transfer to the USS Challenger, a much larger and (in his mind) safer ship to raise his two children along with the assistance of a children's governess, Cassia Blair.

After almost three years Dathan requested a transfer to the USS Horizon after the Chief of Security position became available. Once accepted, he sent his children and Cassia to Starbase 9 so they could be relatively close to each other.

During the Brodarn investigation, Dathan's body was overtaken by a segment of the Sphere's computer, ultimately turning him against his colleagues. In the ensuing battle between the stolen Runabout Britain and the USS Horizon, the Britain was critically damaged. With the Horizon unable to provide assistance (due to his own sabotage) Dathan met with his death as the runabout was swallowed into the partially-deconstructed planet at the centre of the sphere.

Dathan enjoys his work and hates to take time off when there are still things that need to be done. He is also willing to give someone a second chance regardless of what they may have done. Although it may been said that this is a weakness, Dathan has learned a lot by using this behaviour in his life. Dathan's strongest strength is the relationship between his children and himself.

Predict the movements of Romulan and Klingon ships during Battle. Has a unique insight into the Romulans as Dathan spent 3 years in the Romulan officers training school from the age of 13 to 16 and then was transferred to the Imperial Romulan war college, until he was transferred to his Father's ship at the age of 17.

Dathan hates to discuss the matter of his wife (who was killed in a shuttle accident). Dathan believes he could do anything that's thrown at him. He has little patience with rude Klingons and annoying Ferengi.

Like all Starfleet officers, he would like to obtain the rank of Captain. Dathan L'Cir hopes to achieve this someday.

Dathan enjoys going home to Romulus to see the fire falls. Also enjoys the season of Gal'Tula, a time the planet comes together to pick the small oil-rich buds that supply Romulus and Remus with Romulan Ale, and a perfume that is one of the most expensive in all of the Alpha Quadrant.

Dathan believes in many of the Romulan customs that he was brought up to believe. He believes in the 2 great brother of Romulus who instructed the Romulan people to build a road to the stars.

Dathan loves to spend time with his two children (Neathan and Phredria) as well as his friends. He also enjoys old Terran comics. He also enjoys simply getting on with his job.

Rude beings of any race. Has an extreme hatred for the Borg and for the Klingons, who believe that the insurgents on Khitomer and Narendra III were only the fault of the Romulan Star Empire.
