The change had been so gradual that Autumn, in her very relaxed state, might not have noticed the subtle line of questioning. The Chief of Operations had spent a lot of time with her guardian discussing and watching happy past memories of her family.

Her guardian had then expressed an interest in Autumn’s career. Being content in her job she had been eager to let the guardian observe some of her experiences in the Federation. At first the coaxing had seemed natural and the guardian sought to clarify his understanding of what she said when she said things he did not understand.

As she progressed through her career and her decisions became less black and white Autumn got a prickly feeling at the back of her neck. Her guardian’s eyes seemed to be forever moving back and forth. He appeared to assess each piece of information she gave him judging its value and then probing with questions.

This new paranoia made her feel unsettled and she tried to put her finger on what wasn’t right. It was, however, intangible and whatever it was appeared to be just out of reach.

Her guardian was asking about some of the special operations she had been a part of as a security agent. This was one area of her life that she rarely spoke about due to the nature of the jobs and the high need for secrecy. Her guardian pushed a little harder in his enquiry as if he sensed that something top secret was almost in his hands. This was when Autumn realised how exposed she was and begun to withdraw from any interaction.

As if sensing her starting to distance herself, the guardian backed off.

"I apologise, Autumn, I get a little over-enthusiastic at times and can get a little caught up trying to learn as much as I can."

He smiled and Autumn felt ashamed at her suspicions. All he was trying to do was reach out and learn.

"It’s not a problem. It does feel a little strange that this interaction is so one-sided although it has been nice to remember so many memories, especially as I haven’t thought about some of them in such a long time."

"Well you will have to come back to the chamber again before you leave. Perhaps other events in your past will come back to you." He smiled again.

"Now just relax - you will soon be waking from this state and leaving the chamber." A swirling fog began to engulf her. Slowly the light and carefree mood was replaced by a feeling of normalcy and she started to awake.
