Title: A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Bar

"Ensign Remmick, have you finished trying to recalibrate the transporter to work
through this interference?"
"Yeah, I think I'm ready to try it out."
"Are you sure this will work?"
Ensign Remmick had been working on this algorithm for signal enhancement for a
long time. He was excited because if his plan to use subspace parity information
actually worked to enhance the integrity of signals it could mean that their
transporters could work through even the worst of ionic storms. On the other
hand it was still entirely untested.
"It might. Let's try just beaming a simple titanium block in front of the ship
and back."

Troy was just wondering quite academically how he had managed to chop off both
his nose and finger without noticing when a blue shimmering to his left caught
his attention. His arm was encased by a large seamless block of titanium. But as
soon as it had appeared, it disappeared, leaving only part of shoulder behind.

"Sensors indicate that the block never made it outside the ship. Plus, there
appears to be an arm in it."
"Damn!" Remmick exclaimed. "Guess it's back to the drawing board then."

and not at a writer (although people have chosen to write him previously).
