With game face in place, Captain Deadilus once again seated himself in the big chair. Taking a deep breath, he held it for a moment before addressing the Security Officer on duty.

"Lieutenant Smith, are you still of the opinion that we should raise our shields?"

Her answer was a mild surprise. "No, Sir."

"Explain."

"You and the CSO are both of the opinion that the future has not yet been written. I'm just a Security Officer and have no true knowledge of such things. However, I do pride myself in being a good judge of human nature..."

"Go on..."

"On the flipped side of the coin, the future-Horizon Captain has made it quite clear that she does in fact believe that our destiny has already been ordained."

"And?"

"Well, Sir... it makes no difference what we think, she will not fire on this ship. Should she damage it irreparably... she'd be endangering her place in the present."

Deadilus nodded. In her own peculiar fashion, Smith had worked her way to the crux of their current situation.

He tapped the comm.
