Title: The Universe Does Make Sense
Author: CMO Ted Matthews
Time: After “Once a Doctor...”
Scene: USS Horizon – Sickbay/Brig
Ted wasn’t sure if he was comforted or not by Emma watching his back. She had an
impulsiveness that was quite alarming in someone who carried a phaser! However,
as she stated her reasoning behind her action, the CMO had to agree she had a
point and that maybe he should write more about her motives and less about her
actions in his report about why a phaser was fired in medical.
The doctor tried to make Gabriel as comfortable as he could; the Ensign could
probably do with the bed-rest and Ted imagined the young man would find that a
hard thing to do if he wasn’t restrained, so perhaps the universe did make sense
after all.
As Gabriel came around he seemed to take the situation well and started to
recount some of what had happened on the planet. The information the Rennas had
forcible taken from the young man could possibly compromise the Horizon. Having
informed the Captain of the possible breach they could only thank their lucky
stars that the crewmember they had taken was relatively new to the ship and
wasn’t in a role that could give their enemy a huge advantage over the ship.

Gabriel’s treatment of Lily proved that Ted didn’t have to worry about leaving
him in sickbay whilst he went to check on Three. Ted had been given access to
certain aspects of Three’s medical history and so he prepared several
medications that might come of use.
As Ted entered the Brig he was disturbed to see Three so angry and displaying
actions Ted considered out of character. Emma stood with her hand on her phaser
a couple of feet back from the imprisoned Tactical Officer; there was no way the
CMO was going to lower the forcefield to administer a sedative, so instead he
flooded the space with gas. Once Three was out cold he lowered the forcefield,
administered a powerful sedative to keep him out for a while longer, and started
running a full-body scan.
Three’s body was functioning within previously established norms recorded by the
Doctor. However, huge amounts of adrenalin coursed through him and the nanites
in his system had become more active than had been recorded recently, perhaps
explaining his previous outburst of aggression, but Ted concluded that Three was
physically okay; the demons that had been unleashed within the Ensign would
probably need to be treated by a counsellor rather than a doctor.
For now he made him comfortable and set up the computer to monitor any change in
him.
