Title: Recovery
Author: Lt. (JG) Marc Remmick
Time: During and After "Drastic Action (Part 2)"
Scene: USS Horizon - Main Engineering
The Horizon's systems were completely balking at their frustrated masters.
Perhaps it was the devastating energy bolt they'd taken from the Conquer,
perhaps it was the near-impact of a tidal wave of solar energy, perhaps it was
being shot through time like a torpedo, or perhaps it was that for the past four
months or so, she had endured a constant tirade of attacks, malfunctions,
sabotage and phenomena. In a fit of contrariness, Horizon's entire bioneural
network was shutting down.
Lieutenant Remmick, currently leading the repair force, felt like he could quite
enjoy sitting down in the middle of the engine room and sticking his fingers in
his ears as well.
"Ensign, the answer is simple. Ignore every diagnostic the Damage Response
Program is giving you, take out your tricorder, and do it YOURSELF!" He bellowed
at a pale-faced young man, who could barely chirp a worryingly high 'Yes, Sir'
before scuttling out of the irascible engineer's presence.
"Mr. Kahn! Revise your priority lists. Give me deflector control and warp drive,
and shift all other primary systems down a grade. Patch around every blown
conduit you can, bend the safety regs if you have to - but give me the power to
move this overgrown garbage scow more than a few kilometres in any direction!"
The Horizon's dedicated repair technician, a stoic and capable technician,
merely nodded his acknowledgement, and turned to his own staff.
Marc Remmick ran his skinny hands through his untidy mane of black hair and
glared at the Master Systems Display. The only time he got his hands on some
superiority, and all he had was command over half a battle-damaged ship! Even as
he thought it, the surprise struck him...
All his career, he'd been fixated on working in the labs at Jupiter Station, but
now, a new desire was growing in his rapidly-changed personality. The Horizon
wasn't just a stepping-stone to the next stage in his life - it was his home,
his responsibility, and now... his desire!
He grinned in spite of himself - he could get used to this new direction in
life.
