The Som-Nya are an apparently peaceful and
technologically advanced civilisation located on their homeworld Kah'Leel
(literally translated as Kah-2, the second planet in orbit of the star 'Kah').
The 'Dream Chambers' have been used to provide a
thoroughly relaxing sleep for visitors, although they are used on their own
people annually (at least) to track crimes, potential crimes, infidelity,
etc.
The Som-Nyan people, through trade with other races, know
of the Federation and Starfleet fairly extensively. However, they are one of
the few technologically advanced races that choose not to travel space in
large numbers (although they do possess warp technology). As such, no known colonies exist (although their people did
use space-travel more frequently over 1000 years ago).
Of the Alpha/Beta quadrant races, the Klingons,
Cardassians and Ferengi are known to have had dealings with them in the
past.

During investigation by the USS Horizon the Som-Nyan dream chambers
were found to be being used for subtle brainwashing, detection of 'guilt'
(and their associated crime or misdemeanour) and even torture. A
resistance movement was found to be in place during reconnaissance by Lt.
Autumn Falls (Horizon Chief of Operations) and contact with these people
established as close to standard protocols as possible. The resistance had
been planning to move, and subsequently did move, against its own government
in an attempt to end the 'rule of the dream chambers'. Although
very few people were harmed on the planet, during the revolt the Som-Nyan's
employed a previously undetected 'heavy weapon', capable of penetrating the
shields of and destroying a D'Kora class Ferengi vessel, in an attempt to
destroy the Starfleet vessel. This weapon provides further evidence that the
'dream chambers' have been used on unsuspecting visitors to glean advanced
technological innovations from them. A virus introduced
into the 'dream chamber' control systems by Science Officer Feyd Ralari has
rendered these devices inoperative, destroying vital components, including
memory cores. It is assumed that the short exposure by the Horizon crew and
subsequent destruction of the 'dream chamber' memory cores' means that no
critical data has been lost, although Lieutenant Kehn's torture at the hands
of the Som-Nyan military may have exposed classified details... |
