Length of Day: 28 hrs  43.6 mins
Parent Star: Thara
Parent Star Class: G-II (similar to Sol)

Environmental / Surface Characteristics:
Atmosphere: 70% Nitrogen / 25% Oxygen. Remaining 5% minor gasses, primarily Carbon Dioxide and Methane.
Hydrosphere: Approximately 65% of planetary surface covered by water. Small polar icecaps in Northern and Southern polar regions, covering approximately 3% of planet surface.
Climate: Temperatures vary from subzero (degC) in polar regions to almost 30 degC in equatorial region. Weather is typically dry, although thunderstorms are extremely severe when they occur.
Resources: Minerally rich. Abundancy of heavy metals, especially in mountainous regions.
Indigenous Life: Abundant plant life (typically quiet large and hardy due to warm and dry weather). Some small mammals and birds. No humanoid species.

Technological Characteristics:
Federation Colonies: Civilian level of early 24th century / current technology. Both colonies are effectively small cities in their own right.
(Note: Domed facilities are not used due to the earth-similar atmosphere and weather)
Spacedock (planetary): Late 23rd century / early 24th century.
Research Facilities: Advanced level of current medical technology.

Sociological Characteristics:
Government: A government comprised of members of local community rules over local decisions.
Decisions may also be (and have been) discussed with the Federation.
Culture: Primarily Federation civilians, and as such peaceful in nature.
Religious beliefs vary from individual to individual, but range from atheistic to polytheistic.
Affiliation: Federation (Outpost - Colony and Research)

Notes:

Tharan 3 is home to two Earth colonies, a planet-based spacedock and several medical research facilities, specialising in bio-neural, viral, and genetic studies.

The original colony was established in the late 23rd century as an outpost at the edge of Federation space, providing electronics listening posts, staging areas and a Federation presence towards the as-yet unexplored regions of space. With the majority of Federation expansion subsequently halted, a second colony was added, functioning primarily in a support role for the spacedock, first colony and research facilities.

During the Dominion War, much of Starfleet's presence in this and nearby sectors of space was withdrawn and used to bolster defences at the Cardassian, Gorn and Tholian borders. With heavy losses endured by the Federation and its allies, many worlds in this sector were almost forgotten about, and it has only been recently noticed that reports from Tharan 3 have not been filed for some time.

Amendment: Stardate 61001:0000
Tharan 3 has been declared 'Off-Limits' due to viral infection and death of over 99.9% of the population. Medical Research facility is to be investigated by biohazard teams when safe working environment can be established.

The virus, a mutation of one being researched, has a proven cure, although it must be administered as early on in the infection stages as possible to prevent brain damage, etc.

The Raiders responsible for the virus outbreak have not been, as yet, located. Whilst it is assumed they have perished, until proof can be found they should be assumed as 'Carriers' of the virus. Efforts are underway to locate them.

Status:
UNDER QUARANTINE

First vessel on the scene, the USS Horizon, rescued survivors of virus before transportation to the USS Exeter.
