A person learns a thing or two when fighting an enemy who has the
single-minded goal of wiping your species off the face of the galaxy. One of
those things was how to use certain chemical combinations to enable a body to
fight longer, harder and better, there was always a downside of course, but the
hope was always that the battle would be won before the downer hit.
I went to the medical replicator and began replicating the things I would
need. The computer, of course, was programmed not to allow the substances to be
created directly. So I had to create the components and mix them myself, using
my command codes to override various safeties and regulations as needed. It
didn’t take Dr. Mathews long to figure out what I was doing and he did the right
thing, he protested and gave me the medical reasons why I should not do what I
was about to do. He was absolutely right. The problem was I didn't have time for
the 'book' right now.
"Doctor, I'm fully aware of what I'm doing, I can't afford right now to be in
this condition. I'll make you a deal, once the ships are secure and safe and we
have a chance to start figuring out who is hitting us, I will be your guest in
the sickbay of your choice until you see fit to release me," I said, using the
hypo-spray on myself.
I got the dose right. I stopped feeling the pain, and started to feel my
regular strength. I was fortunate, chemistry is not my strong point, and the
stim I was using had some other peculiar effects that were great for close
combat but not so conducive to higher level thought and planning.
"Number One, assemble the senior staff in my ready room, I want to find out
now who's with me and who's not. Arm yourself as well. We'll give the crew a
choice, those who're with us can stay, those who aren't will be allowed to leave
for the starbase," I stated.
Abby gave her assent and as she started to go, I called after her. I wanted a
briefing on what had happened while I was out. Burgle was a name I recognized as
well. I shook my head, I should have been more aware of who the Commanding
Officers were of my 'home'.
"Abby, one more thing, when Scott mentioned our days in the academy, did he
mention the fact that it was usually his quick wit that got us into the position
where our chivalry was called into play?"
"No Captain, I don't believe he did," Abby said with a small smile.
I nodded, and then winked at her, "very well, carry on."
I was glad to have Scott watching my back again, I just hoped that whoever
was out to get me, wasn't now out to get him as well.
