Title: Untold Mysteries
Author: Executive Officer Abigail Winters
Time: After "Finds Of Significance"
Scene: Parsus
Resting on the sandy plains was the impressive form of the Relentless. She
seemed undaunted by the winds that kept aggressively throwing gritty sand at her
shiny new paintwork. The view before them wasn't quite as encouraging as the
sturdy vessel they had arrived on; instead there were many things that indicated
that this world had not known any kind of long lasting peace. The different
shapes and colours of damaged and decaying ships indicated that neither side of
the battle came away from the confrontation truly victorious and it begged the
question why bother fighting for this hostile seemingly barren planet?
Abigail shuddered as a cold wind lifted her hair away from her neck and sent a
cold shiver all the way down her spine. Maxine informed the group of the ruins
not to far away from their landing site to the south and the Captain suggested
this would be a good place to start looking for the elusive unknown thing they
were here too find. The XO was sure she saw McFrey rolled his eyes and 'tut' as
they started the difficult journey forward.
As they approached the ruins it was a surprise to see such an expansive
facility. The XO had been expecting to find something closer to the circle of
rocks at Stonehenge. Instead this place had the looks of an underground kingdom.
The excavation equipment that was left lying around was difficult to place an
age on due to the harsh surface conditions. As they slowly descended the long
winding staircase Abby moved closer to the Captain.
"When you were last here do recall any of this?" Abby trailed one hand down the
wall to keep her balance on the sometimes-precarious stairs.
"I don't recall seeing anything like this." The haunted look had not left the
Captain's eyes and he carried on down the stairs determinately holding his
phaser at the ready.
Abby briefly turned to look at the Chief Science Officer behind her.
"What do you think this place is Maxine?" Abby noted a look of excitement in her
friend's eyes.
"The preliminary readings I have got suggest we could be walking into one of the
biggest well kept secrets about the Progenitor race." There was a note of awe in
the CSO's voice that made Abigail smile and she couldn't help but feel the
thrill of such a prospect.
"We could also be walking into a trap." The words of the previously silent
Laurence Adams diminished some of the fun of the find.
"You're right," the Captain said. "If this is what Lt. Jenna thinks it is then
why don't we already know about it? And why is it now deserted and seemingly
unguarded?" As Alex fell silent a menacing noise reached them on a strong gust
of wind. A howl is the best way to describe it. Not quite human, not quite
animal but loud and scary in a way that awakes the primeval flight or fight
mechanism in every living being. The Away Team paused as they reached the
entrance to complex. Abby held her breath - the sound had come from behind them,
which left them in a slight dilemma. Behind them was the strange howling and
before them was a doorway that led to untold mysteries and possible dangers.
As Abby looked around the assembled away team she could see the same thoughts
reflected in each of their eyes.
Meeting the Captain's eyes she saw him smile and the unspoken question in his
eyes. Abigail knew he would go forward no matter what she said but she too
wanted to proceed further and so when she nodded he wasted no time in entering
the complex.
As they walked through the entrance the team were enveloped in a still musty
silence. The complex being slightly under the surface of the planet and the
walls being very thick kept the air in the room cool. There was some kind of low
voltage light source emanating from the walls in the spacious entrance room that
they now stood and Maxine walked around the outer walls taking further readings.
Kal was doing the typical engineer thing and was tapping the walls; Abby could
only presume he was looking for some structural weakness. There was no sound
coming from the one door that led further into the complex, but from behind the
door they had just entered there was a faint noise similar to the howl they had
heard earlier. McFrey stood with his phaser covering their backs; Captain Khavok
reached forward motioning for Adams to cover him and pushed the door.
The screeching of an alarm broke the eerie silence.
