Title: The Best Defense
Author: Ensign Laurence Adams
Time: During "We Come In Peace"
Scene: USS Relentless
Ensign Laurence Adams was frazzled. Ever since Lt. McFrey had been struck down,
he'd been running around trying to keep the department running, and more
importantly keep everyone safe. He thought back to the last few days. McFrey had
been brought back to the Relentless, and was in a coma in Sickbay. The further
exploration of the Progenitor complex had been much more methodical at that
point, and the prospect of the new technology had been exciting.
Laurence shook his head. That technology was going to be nothing but trouble.
Alternate dimensions? This was going to be trouble. "Why did McFrey need to go
down now?" The Ensign asked himself as he rubs his temples between his fingers.
"What was that, sir?" Crewman Jennings asked from behind a desk across the room.
"Nothing Crewman," Laurence responds with a large sigh. He'd been working on the
security detail for the away mission. *Away mission? It's our own ship, sort of*
He thinks to himself with a snort. Jennings was a useful sort, so Adams puts his
name down on the list.

Ensign Laurence Adams stands with Ensign Rory Erickson in the security office
with two crewmen, Yates among them. "Okay. We're the security detail for this
away mission. I know that the Captain seems to trust this alternate Relentless
that's found us, but frankly, I don't. We don't know anything about this people,
and any universe where the Klingons and the Romulans are not at war is not a
universe I'm familiar with."
Rory chuckles a bit. "What Ensign Adams is trying to say is that we're going to
be on guard on this one. Phasers will be kept to stun, and holstered until we
need them, if we do at all," he says shooting a look at Laurence.
"Hopefully, we're just there for show."
"Exactly," Laurence continues. "We're meeting the away team in fifteen minutes.
See you in Transporter Room A. Dismissed," he finishes.
=/\= The Meeting =/\=
Ensign Adams and Ensign Erickson stood on the flanks of the away team, the two
crewmen taking up the rear. The show of force was nominal, but the two Ensigns
weren't ready to allow it any other way. After all, it was potentially hostile
territory.
When the meeting with the doubles was suggested, Laurence was hesitant. They'd
already lost one member of the Senior Staff. He didn't see any reason to suggest
an opportunity for another. It probably didn't help that his double was
Andorian, and he had trouble seeing past the antenna on top of her head.
But, the Captain and XO were all for it, so he didn't see an opportunity.
Lindria Adanima approached Laurence Adams. "You always bring weapons when you're
meeting yourself?" She asks.
"Seems like a worthwhile precedent," Laurence responds. "Your phasers seem a
little different from ours," he continues gesturing to the weapon at her side.
It was much slimmer than Ensign Adams own weapon.
"Uses the dimension shifting technology. It lacks a powercell because it can tap
into near limitless energy reserves. There's some debate on how safe it is,
though. Most of Starfleet uses what you're carrying. Are you telling me you only
want to talk shop?" The Andorian woman asks with a slight smile.
"To be honest? I'm not sure what sort of similarities I could possibly have with
an Andorian analogue of myself."
"Well, have you ever been to the fifth planet of the Andorian home system? Even with terra-forming it was a miserable desert planet."
"Yeah, I grew up on Mars. I know all about desert worlds," Laurence
continues,
slowly getting into the conversation.
