"Captain's Log Stardate 60917.0630

I am surprised by my reaction to meeting my first other-self. I found that there was much less commonality than I had thought and have to admit to having some worry that if I faced myself in a combat situation what the outcome would be. After spending some time with my fellow Captain it became clear that while we did share some common ground our experiences and defining moments were for the most part dissimilar enough to make us completely different people. Perhaps this lends credence to the environmental upbringing argument that sociologists use to explain behavior. I will leave that up to them.

Reactions from the crew to their other-selves have been mixed, with some embracing the idea readily and some being quite disturbed and resistant. I find my self with less of an embrace than I had originally hoped. There are a number of things about this first meeting that make me uneasy and while there has been no open hostility, both myself and Commander Winters agree that there is a certain lack of openness and an undercurrent of tension that seems just under the surface.

There have been some interesting developments within the crew that are worth watching. The CEO's revelation about his true race is interesting, and seems to have bothered him much more than it does me. I can understand his trepidation but as he's given no reason to doubt his loyalty I remain aware but unconcerned. There has been some problem in Operations. I despise senior enlisted personnel who try to embarrass and intimidate newly commissioned officers. They are typically the ones who couldn't make it in the Academy and take their resentment out where they think they can. Ensign Levi did handle the situation and with the support of his department head. I think he has some rough edges but nothing that can't be smoothed with time and experience.

The Trokarn prisoner disturbs me greatly. Ensign Levi's connection with it gives lie to the message we received as we made our first jump. The question of what to do with alien is as unclear now as it was when it was first beamed aboard. Are we in a situation of a grave misunderstanding or simply dealing with an individual who disagrees with his species norm? Can we trust this individual? As soon as the doctor can stabilize our guest I will have it assigned quarters with a security detail.

This is one for the record books as being odd. I say this with a smile because so much of what we run into in this universe is different and odd that it is impossible to have any kind of standard to what is odd and what is normal. Most days I would consider a "normal" day to be odd. Reports of the Relentless herself achieving sentience continue to come in and she appears to have the most contact with Lt. Vilmer and Commander Winters. This is an exciting development and I hope she will be cooperative. We don't have enough information yet to make any kind of estimation of her (Relentless') level of maturity or capability so again we watch and wait.

This finally brings me to a very happy and final entry for this log. LTCMDR Winters has proved to be a very capable officer and has handled herself with in keeping with the highest traditions of Starfleet. It is with great pleasure that I recommend her for promotion to Commander. I will take care of this via secure channel as soon is we're back in home territory."

"Computer, end log," I ordered, standing and straightening my uniform.

=/\= Bridge =/\=

I strode onto the bridge greeting my XO and the rest of the bridge crew with a smile. I don't believe anyone was more eager than I to get back home and have a couple of days to digest everything that had happened to us. We bid our other-selves good bye and when engineering gave the green light, I ordered the jump back home. As the bubble collapsed we appeared back in familiar territory. The Trokarn vessel was nowhere to be found and we headed back to Starbase 9 at maximum warp to deliver our report and some much needed rest.
