Title: Listening To The Chatter

Scene: USS Relentless/Starbase 9


Even though they were docked at Starbase 9 Abby had opted to stay on the Relentless in her office reading through the crew reports and maintenance logs, listening to the chatter over the com-link. Abby found the stream of steady voices reassuring.

After a few hours her attention was drawn away from her paperwork, when an alert went out for a medical emergency. Making her way to medical she found the new doctor attending to a slightly dazed Kal.

"So, Doctor, is he going to live?" Abigail asked.

"I think so." The doctor said without taking his attention off the CEO.

"What happened Kal?" The XO sat herself on the bed.

"It was amazing, I managed to interface myself with the ship and unbelievably she is sentient. We managed to chat and she is really quite something." Kal shook his head.

The doctor threw a questioning look at the XO.

"Don't worry. Kal has always been slightly unhinged." The CEO and XO exchanged smiles.

"You should be thanking me; I have proved that you aren't crazy and that you aren't hearing random voices." The doctor was watching the good-humoured sparing between the two.

"So tell me what Relly is like?" Abby was curious.

"Well I have an idea that might make it easier for us all to communicate with her. It's going to take some major re-work of some hardware I have all set up. But I think I can do it."

"Kal, promise me one thing. Clear it with the Captain before you try integrating yourself with the ship again. Now would be a really bad time to lose our chief engineer.

"Yes, sir." Abby left the CEO and new doctor. She opened up a communication channel and gave the Captain a brief update.

With the Relentless docked and repairs and maintenance already under way there was nothing much to do so Abby decided to go look around the Starbase before her meeting with the Admiral.

"Abigail. It's nice to see you. How are you?" The Admiral asked with an assessing look in her eyes.

"I'm good, thank you Admiral. And yourself?"

"Very good. Tell me, how has this assignment been for you?" Abby had been expecting this question and tried to give an answer without sounding too rehearsed.

"It's been quite an adventure and a learning experience. We have faced many challenges with the crew but I think with the new rotation of staff we can over come any future problems."

"And how are you getting along with Alex?" Abby felt as if she was under the microscope.

"He is a very capable captain, we have our differences but we are learning to work together." Abby finished talking and the silence seemed to stretch on forever.

"He thinks well of you, in fact he is promoting you to Commander. Look surprised when he gives you the pips." The Admiral smiled.

"Thank you and I will look surprised." Abby was slightly a taken back

"Well, enjoy this brief rest on Starbase 9. We will be sure to meet up before you leave you again."
