Title: Unfinished Business (Part 1)
Authors: Ambassador Thessyr Tal and Lt. Yonatan Levi.
Time: After 'Doppelganger'
Scene: USS Relentless
Galt strode quietly down the corridor onboard the Relentless. The assassin was
dressed in ordinary clothes and employed his nanotechnology to alter his face.
Whenever he was asked by one of the crewmembers about his destination, he simply
replied that he was heading back to the cargo bay, where the survivors of the
Solar Winds were currently located.
The crew were all tense, scanning the ship, turning it upside down. They had
lost a bomb, a deadly one. But if they expected it to still be on the ship then
they were complete fools. It was, of course, difficult to sneak a bomb through a
small ship like this, as Omega particles were unique and easy to pinpoint with
sensors, but thankfully his employer was very powerful and well connected to the
right elements within this Federation. Therefore, getting a well-secured bomb
off the ship wasn’t the hard task you would think it would be.
He had no idea where this second Relentless had appeared from, but they had
definitely altered the way this plan was supposed to go. Now all that was left
was to minimize the damage that had been caused and eliminate the evidence that
could lead to some personal catastrophic consequences if anyone was to know the
true origin of the bomb.
To that extent, Captain Merdlock had been a loose end that he had enjoyed tying
up.
~
Yoni was sat in the flight operations office; an engineering crew nearby were
repairing the recent damage done to Relly. The operations officer was trying to
look at it from a different perspective - he wanted to know what information had
been accessed and who had faked the approval of the chief engineer regarding the
transferring of the bomb.
There were too many puzzles in front of him: the attack on sentient Relly – what
was the reason or goal? Who faked the security logs? Who had stolen the Omega
bomb? Yoni was sure that there was a connection between the three; there were
too many loose ends, too many clues left behind, and he was hoping he could
pinpoint one of them and be able to put the puzzle together.
<Diagnostic complete,> said the computer. Yoni turned to one of the screens on
the desk and examined the findings. Whoever had broken into the computer core
had done one hell of a job, leaving no traces behind and nothing to find.
Slamming on the table he picked up a PADD and got up from his seat, heading out.
If he wanted to know what was stolen, he should ask the only person who was
there when it happened - Relly.
~
Thess and Relly were sitting and enjoying one another's company, Thess having a
bowl of tea and Relly interacting with him socially. They'd been having a
conversation of sorts - not talking about what happened to her, more just
establishing the parameters of their relationship.
"Why did you choose to be a diplomat, Thess?" Relly had asked a moment before,
sitting and regarding him curiously.
"I didn't so much as choose to do it," he chuckled, setting the bowl down and
looking thoughtfully aside, "so much that I was called to do so. I used to be
the Chief Medical Officer on a Starfleet vessel working for a Captain that was…
difficult. He believed that Humans were superior to other beings and that aliens
weren't trustworthy." She sighed and smiled fondly, "It took several years but
eventually I won his trust, though not without great cost to both of us."
"What do you mean?" she asked, "If it's not too private…" she seemed unsure and
wary.
"The Captain and his First Officer had an uneasy relationship," Thess replied
with a cock of his head and a soft smile. "He was infatuated with her and she
didn't return his feelings. She and I had an away mission to my home-world for
some personal business with my family; and she accompanied me as my prehn-keth,
my anchor. We became intimate while we were there and," he shrugged slightly and
smiled, "she became pregnant with my child. I offered her formal regard as my
prehn hallah, first mate, but she chose to simply take another assignment."
"What of your child then?" she asked, nothing like this was in his public
personnel file.
"Elja and her mother live on a Deltan colony at the moment," Thess replied
softly as he turned to regard her, "where her mother studies to master her
latent empathy and healing." Then he turned his head slightly and glanced at the
door, even as the call chime sounded.
"It is Lieutenant Levi," Relly told Thess, who nodded in silent recognition. "Can he
join us?"
"Please," Thess told her, moving his chair to one side so the other officer
could have a seat and speak to her.
"Enter," she said, commanding the door to open.
At first Yoni didn't pay much attention to his surroundings, instead more
focused on the PADD he was holding than the others. Thess didn’t rush him,
letting him clear his head before he should start speaking.
