Title: Unfinished Business (Part 3)
Authors: Ambassador Thessyr Tal and Lt. Yonatan Levi.
Time: After 'Doppelganger'
Scene: USS Relentless, XO’s office
A moment before he left the XO’s officer the entity returned to bug him. He had
slipped into a nearby computer system and, with Yoni’s level of access, had
deduced by the requests and tests being run, that Lt. Jenna and Lt. Vilmer were
slightly ahead on their investigation and were worth a visit.
"Lieutenant," Thess spoke softly, his tone was compelling though he exerted no
real force. "May I speak with you for a moment?" He glanced at Relly and smiled
apologetically. "Privately?"
Relentless disconnected her holographic body. A soft chirp told them she had
disabled local sensors.
"Sure, go ahead, Sir," Yoni replied. The Ensign called him 'Sir' as a way to
demonstrate the respect he felt towards him due to his greater experience and
age, although he was out of the ranking system that was employed by Starfleet.
"I am curious about something I have observed that seems to be unique to this
ship," he remained cautious, his mind open to impressions but surrounded by a
barrier like transparent aluminum. It could be sensed through but any force of
substance would find hard resistance.
"What is it?" he asked eventually.
"There have been not one," he gestured to where Relentless had been a moment
ago, "but two incorporeal entities I have encountered here," he gestured back to
Yoni. "I must surmise the entity is cautious of outside contact.” He cocked his
head the other way with a comforting smile. "I would like to meet this
life-form."
Yoni smiled, his cheeks blushing. So far he hadn’t shared his little secret with
anyone else except the Captain and the ship's doctor, and he was quite able to
keep the arrangement with the alien entity to himself.
"You mean the Trokarn consciousness you've detected running in my mind?" He
asked in a very shy voice. "Back on Parsus we were caught together in the same
transporter beam, and we ended up in the infirmary – a part of his consciousness
trapped in my mind. Since then I have had to share…"
*Happy to share, and don't deny that,* spoke the entity to Yoni.
"… have been happy to share," Yoni giggled and corrected himself, "the same
compartment together with him. As for talking to him, it would be difficult
since our physiology is too alien, and he can't take and use my body as a tool.
However, if you wish to talk to it in person – we may be able to use the
holodeck to accomplish this task, giving it a 'simple' body of photons and force
field – to master and communicate with the environment. "
"That's very interesting," Thess cocked his head curiously. "I can also
communicate directly with him, mind-to-mind. Apparently he is able to use a sort
of psionic feature that your mind might lack normally. It’s one of the reasons I
have become a diplomat; so that I can communicate with species that are
otherwise unable to use a universal translator but are still psionically
receptive."
Yoni raised an eyebrow. "I didn't know Deltans had such ability. I was sure
until today that only Vulcans were capable of direct telepathic communication –
their infamous Mind Meld." Yoni hesitated for a second and then went on, "I feel
like going to the dentist for the first time of my life and asking if it is
gonna hurt… when would you like to try?"
"Whenever," Thess reassured him. "Deltans are primarily empathic but some of us
are trained to telepathy. Vulcans are usually strong touch-telepaths but have
very little ranged ability. Betazoids and Cairn are good distance telepaths,
though the latter tend to use pictures more than actual interpreted words." He
chuckled and made a dismissive gesture, "I wax long-winded again. It's required
to know who can do what in my line of work." He gestured to Yoni, "Perhaps when
the current emergency is over, your resident and I may open a dialogue?"
"Sounds promising." Yoni noted and moved toward the door. "As soon as we are
back at Starbase 9… ‘our’ Starbase 9… I will come back to visit you. Hopefully
you can understand it a little bit more than I do."
"I am fascinated," Thess replied graciously, "and eager to try."
"Well, Ambassador, thank you very much for your help. Please thank Relly for me.
If you will excuse me, I have an assassin and a thief to catch," he smiled. "I
will see you later," he said, exiting the office.
"Good hunting," Thess called after him and sighed as the door slid shut,
considering his next duties. Time for a bit of a change and a little intel…
