Title: The Admiral and The Assassin
Author: Admiral Foster & John Galt
Time: Current
Scene: Starbase 9

Before she reached her office Elizabeth started taking deep breaths; she was mentally preparing herself for possibly the most important meeting of her life. No, it wasn’t with a high-ranking official or a possible suitor - it was with an assassin.

Desperation and a love for her people had made her seek out a deadly weapon. John Galt had frequented the station for several years and she had a dossier of alleged criminal activities that he had been involved in, though nothing had ever been proved.

Not usually a vain woman, she did take a minute to look over her appearance, straighten a few stray hairs and rub at the smudged lipstick mark. When you deal with the devil you should expect to get burnt. Libby entered the room with her frostiest smile.

"Mr Galt, please don’t trouble yourself," she said as John started to get out of the chair he had been lounging in."

The assassin looked at the woman momentarily and with a look that said ‘suit yourself’ settled back into the chair. He watched her, waiting for her to speak, wondering what she knew and what she would reveal. He had not failed in a task yet and did not intend to make this the first time.

"I have your merchandise," Galt said at last, "there were some unforeseen...obstacles."

In spite of herself Libby's eyes widened. The bombshell Galt had just exploded did not square with the events as explained by their visitors. The Admiral began to wonder on whose side this other Relentless was on. Even as she voiced the thought to herself she realized they would be on their own side. Libby felt things growing even more out of control than they already were, an already murky situation growing murkier.

What troubled her most was that while fighting the Dominion she had never in her worst nightmares thought she might have to fight against her own people. She shuddered, thinking about the orders she could, and would, give to protect the station. Libby didn't waste time with the how - the assassin fulfilled his end of the bargain.

"She's sentient you know," Galt said mildly, "if she was just a construct we wouldn't be having this conversation."

"She who?" Admiral Foster asked.

"The ship - that advanced warbird parked outside." The assassin flicked his wrist towards the window. "But enough of the pleasantries, let’s discuss the exchange. My fee, for your bomb."

It was time to pay the piper. The deal had been a hard-struck one, not only because John’s services were expensive but also because, in a time of war, everything had a different value.

"Where is the bomb now?" Elizabeth asked.

"Please, Admiral, I am not an amateur." Knowing she would not be able to ‘out fox’ him they arranged a plan for the exchange that suited them both.
