Title: The Rainforest
Author: Lieutenant (JG) Yonatan Levi, Acting Chief of Operations
Time: After 'System Failure'
Scene: Somewhere on the planet...
A falling star in the sky made its way quickly towards the ground, like a
shining bolt that split the sky into two. After a moment, a loud noise filled
the air as the bolt hit the ground in the middle of a rain forest. Many birds
spread their wings and let the wind carry them outside of the crash zone.

Yoni regained consciousness slowly. He felt as though a dozen daggers were
stabbing his mind, sending waves of pain throughout his skull. He rubbed his
left temple, trying to ease the pain. Dazed, he turned around; their shuttle had
hit the ground with so much force that the impact had tore away their nacelles,
buckled the shuttle nose and smashed the cockpit's windowpane in a few places.
Behind him he spotted Ensign Janwan and Crewman Larisa lying face down on the
floor. With the investment of some effort, he managed to get up and approach the
injured crewmembers. Using a medical tricorder that was available for him, he
determined that Siri was suffering from a mild concussion and Teresa had broken
her arm. Things weren't bright for them.
~
"Are you alright?" Yoni asked Siri as she at last began to wake up. Using his
poor medical skills, Yoni managed to stabilize the Ensign's condition and gave
minimal treatment to Larisa's arm. He tried to fix it, but wasn't sure if what
he was doing was right. He cursed himself for not paying more attention during
First Aid class.
Janwan opened her eyes and fixed her sight on the panel in front of her; it was
like she was trying to balance her perception. She sat up, holding her head, her
face twisting, because of the pain she was filled with.
"Yes sir, I believe so," she said at first and looked at Larisa. "How is she?"
"I think she'll be alright; her injury is not severe," Yoni said as he handed
the medical tricorder to Janwan. Taking it, she scanned the young female and she
too came to the conclusion that she was fine.
~
After the three felt better and more like their old selves, they grabbed their
gear and moved outside of the crashed shuttle. Moving around, they were more
able to determine their condition.
They were in the middle of a large clearing, surrounded with many thick trees
and wild flora. Behind them, further in the distance there was a large ridge of
mountains which Yoni suspected was where Maxine's shuttle went down. The skies
were of the purest blue with no sign of clouds. The yellow sun above them
blessed their morning with a shining light.
"I believe we can find a great landing site for the Relentless itself, Sir."
Teresa approached Yoni. "I think we should get ourselves a few of those
communications beacons we brought along and go search for one."
"Maybe. But I don't see us finding a large enough area to land the Relentless in
this rainforest. We might need to take a hike toward that ridge and hope we can
find a plane or a valley that set a distance between the mountains and the
forest."
"Aye, Sir. I think I should go get the equipment." Yoni nodded in agreement.
"Ready the survival kits, grab three of the beacons and make sure you have the
portable communication unit; not the heavy one, but they new type that goes into
the bag. Phaser rifles and headsets for our protection."
"Sir, I believe we have bigger problems than that." Siri approached them
quickly, not giving Teresa time to reply to Yoni's orders. "I'm picking up
humanoids coming this way, a kilometre away; twelve life signs – and they are
moving fast."
"The natives..." Yoni mumbled quietly.
