Title: New Toys for the Armourer
Author: Lt. (JG) Robert Browning
Time: Current
Scene: Bridge
As Lt. Heyward left the bridge to work on his brainwave, Robbie took out a PADD
and handed it to Captain Winters.
"You may want to read this, Ma'am; it's my preliminary analysis of the ship's
systems during and after that last attack."
Captain Winters skimmed the PADD before looking up. "Do you want to give me the
abridged version, Lieutenant?"
"According to the readings from the warp core, the lack of a warp field
momentarily was due to localised spatial anomalies... more specifically
interference from an opposing jump drive."
Surprised looks were passed between the senior staff at this revelation, Maxine
was the first to break the silence, which wasn't helped by the dark on the
bridge.
"How can another jump drive affect our warp drive?"
"Much of this is supposition and educated guessing but what I would say is that
it's not really a dimensional jump drive, more of a dimensional shift. We have
records of species back home that have the ability to shift their technology
into a parallel dimension, mainly for security... and to cause us no end of
problems. Those ships have 'jumped' partially out of this spatial dimension,
allowing them to avoid our sensors and weapons but fire back at us."
"This would explain the effectiveness of the tricobalt warheads... the effect on
subspace would have stunned them enough to back off and counter the interference
from their technology."
The senior staff looked from the Engineer to the CSO as they theorised about
their worsening situation, sidelined as they threw vast theories between one
another over this new tactical advantage.
"Ma'am, it gets worse..." Robbie turned back to the Captain with a more stern
look upon his face. "I've compared the field geometries of our drive to those of
the ships and to the background radiation fields, from what I can discern with
Relly's help is how these Observer's seem to have their omnipotent presence
around here and affect our systems... they are aboard the ship. The frequencies
are too similar to be unalike, I believe they are here, just outside of our
dimensional spectrum."
Commander Jessop finally found his speech again. "Captain, if this is true it
leaves us at a significant tactical disadvantage."
Several minutes passed as Captain Winters processed all this information. Robbie
watched on, happy that he had managed to pass on his findings with little
arguments against it.
"Find them..."
