Title: Risks
Author: Captain Abigail Winters
Time: Current
Scene: USS Relentless
Even as a child, Abigail had always been a very determined person. However, her
tactics of getting her way had changed slightly over the years and instead of
holding her breath until her mother gave in, Abby now employed subtler tactics
like verbally persuading those who opposed her.
The current situation with the Observers made the Captain consider the holding
of breath strategy, but then having watched the Phantom's recent sacrifice she
was sure the Observers would let her perish rather than intervene.
Having been appraised of the situation regarding the intruder on board and its
recent demise, this universe was definitely not going to make it into her
memoirs as the universe you had to visit before you die. Then again, dying was
an all too real possibility, so the memoirs may be dramatically cut short.
Abby had sent Captain Deneuve to sickbay to be with his crew. She was
sympathetic to his loss, but she would not allow his grief to jeopardise the
crew in some reckless retaliatory move.
“Ma'am, sensors are not picking up any ships in pursuit and a varied dispersed
pattern of torpedoes have been detonated to delay any pursuers,” Ensign Snyder
reported from Tactical.
“Very good. Lieutenant Keller bring us to a complete stop in preparation for
inter- universal jump.”
“Aye Ma'am”
“Ensign Zaro.” The Captain knew the officer was working in Engineering, but Lt.
Levi was currently dealing with a crew rooming crisis. “I want a shipwide report
of any damage before we jump.” Damian replied he would have the report off of
the department heads as soon as possible.
Jessop was being unusually quiet and was avoiding eye contact with her; she knew
why – he was upset that he hadn’t been able to persuade her that the logical
course of action was to keep as low a profile as possible and serve their time.
Abigail, on the other hand, was sure that Duncan would quote the first priority
of any prisoner of war – which was to escape. As their attempts to break out
using the jump drive had been unsuccessful, and as their sentence seemed a
perspective of time (for who knew how the Observers counted their months) more
drastic measures were needed.
Isabelle sat ominously quiet. The Captain wanted her here for when they made the
jump. She wasn’t sure what the Observers would do, but Ms Grimm had developed
their legal defence strategy and if they got their chance for a hearing it would
be best that she was on the bridge.
“This is Captain Winters to Engineering. Status report.”
There was a momentary quiet through the communication system.
[Captain, the work on the core and jump drive is complete and Ensign Lox was
able to recover coordinates from the data received from the traders,] Lieutenant
Browning confirmed.
“Stand by.” Abby closed the link. “Dr Talbot report from medical.”
[All patients are stable and those that can have been transported to secure
quarters.]
With all players in place and the equipment ready, Abby knew it was time to make
their move. Inaction would see them slowly died from starvation and alien
attacks. It was risk everything, for a chance of survival.
Relly materialised next to the Captain,
“Don’t worry, they aren’t ALL bad.” With those cryptic words she disappeared to
wherever she usually disappeared to.
“Lieutenant Jenna, engage the drive.”
