Title: Renewal and Relentless
Author: Thessyr Tal & Relly
Time: Current
Scene: USS Relentless
"Relly," Thess spoke to the air knowing she would hear him and if she had a moment, she would inquire. He could have of course just said, 'computer' if he needed to do something with a system, a setting or a library function but it wasn't the computer strictly that he wanted. He wanted the person, the Relentless AI, the entity that lived within the ship and was the ship.
He sat in meditation in his quarters, sitting in a position often called by Human Zazen, more accurately 'open lotus Zazen', the position of 'in-taking enlightenment'. It was amazing how species hundreds of light years apart had developed similar postures and practices from a spiritual direction despite their origins, distance and historical differences. He had always maintained that the Truth knew no species, or history or difference between sentient beings. It simply was.
And truly, the posture didn't matter at all. It was simply the readiness, the preparation, the appropriate perspective and the willingness to receive whatever it was the universe wished to impart.
“Ambassador Tal, you requested my presence.” Relly asked.
"Please," he smiled at her image, "call me 'Thess'. All my friends do."
“As you wish – Thess.”
"Can you tell me what the status of the crew is?" He asked, having sensed the general unease, the illness in pockets, he could tell generally how it was progressing but needed more information to make a decision. "Can you tell me what percentage of the crew is showing illness?"
“Currently 24% of the crew have exhibited signs and symptoms of the illness. Dr Proctor has discovered how the virus attacks the body, but has yet to find an effective cure. He is however hopeful that there will be something of relevance in the Theran databanks that will provide a cure.”
"I should likely contact medical and offer my services," he sighed. "It seems unlikely my primary skills will be in need as long as we are carrying a rampant illness." He considered and then asked, "How do you feel about this illness?"
“I will be fine. It will not effect me.” Relly's answer was logical.
"I know you have emotions," he acknowledged, "but I am unsure if you have ever felt the emotion of loss. Have you considered the possibility that many people could die? Many people you have formed particularly close relationships with?"
“Ensign Lox believes I am incapable of feeling, that I care of nothing and I am just a defective machine. By his logic if I am a defective machine that does not deserve attention, maybe it is the same for all those that are ill - they are detective and I should shut them out like Ensign Lox does with me...”
