Title: Second Guessing
Author: Captain Abigail Winters
Time: Current
Scene: USS Relentless

Second guessing yourself was a bad thing when you were a Captain, but as Abby looked at the alien ship that had caused so much destruction, she wondered whether her lust for revenge was going to ruin them all.

However, there were a few things that were certain regardless of what universe or what situation you were in, and one of those things was that Federation starships protected those who were vulnerable against superior and deadly forces. It made the decision to aid the Theran ship that was about to be the focus of the alien's ship wrath easier to make.

Unlike the other times when they had faced this particular enemy, they did not immediately engage in hostile actions. Instead they seemed poised like a panther waiting to see if its prey was worth expending the energy on.

Keller slowed their approach; if they could avoid a confrontation with the civilian ship in the cross fire then they would.

“Captain, a transmission is coming in from the Theran ship,” Lt. Levi said from the Operations station.

“Put it on screen,” Abby ordered.

“Captain Winters is this unknown vessel that does not answer our hails a friend of yours?” The irony of the statement baffled the bridge crew for a moment.

“I suggest you exercise extreme caution and arm any defensive systems and weapons you may have. They are not our friends.”

All the while the exchange took place everyone was focussed on the actions of the enemy ship and yet it continued to do nothing.

“Captain – your orders?” Jessop asked in a rather feeble voice. Sweat glistened on his brow and he was a looking very pale.

“Open a channel to the enemy ship.” Their silence and inaction was unnerving.

“This is Captain Abigail Winters of the Federation starship USS Relentless to unknown vessel. Please respond.” The ship turned slowly until it was facing them directly.

Silence descended.

[Leave]. An energy weapon was fired just off the port side only narrowly missing them.

“Shall I return fire Ma'am?” Snyder asked from tactical.

“No, signal the Theran ship to withdraw slowly. Keller let us do the same.”

This new tolerance of the enemy felt wrong and as they slowly back away from the ship it started to turn.

It turned and fired on the Theran ship. The blaze of energy weapon light was beautiful and it had a fatal effect. The Theran ship was destroyed and all hands no doubt had been lost...
