"I don't believe that is correct Relly," Thess sighed and shook his head sadly.
"Ensign Lox's personal opinion notwithstanding, sentience and one's emotional state or ability to feel emotions is not open for objective debate." He shrugged and smiled at her image.
"If you hypothesize that emotions, despite the ability of some to feel what others feel, is still a subjective process then the idea that an objective source is authoritative is irrelevant. For example: you can experience an emotion. That is known. You are sentient, capable of unrestrained creativity and able to have spontaneous desires that have no mechanical, therefore strictly logical, origin." He paused and cocked his head regarding her image.
"However, your experience as a sentient is vastly and radically different from the one that Ensign Lox or myself can have and thus a purely subjective experience, how could either of us have the authority to dictate to you what you can and cannot feel or think?"
The uncertainty and crisis of self that Relly was having caused her to treat Thess’ wise words with caution, after all he was a diplomat and she had read how they were trained to ease a person's tension and get the most out of people. Perhaps the Diplomatic Officer thought if he could make her happy about her status as a sentient being, that she would continue to function in her role.
He was, however, right that she was unlike any other and she may have to make her own decision about her role and the extent with which she wished to be perceived in certain ways.
Relly decided to do a bit more research into the perception people held of her. As she had asked a man of science and a man of peace and art, the logical choice was to seek someone in-between, and so she sought the views of the Chief Engineer.
